Qatar’s Rugby, Hockey and Cricket Federation (QRHCF) is gearing up to host the West Asia Rugby Championship, which will see a huge participation from men and women teams from different countries later this month in Doha.
QRHCF President Yousef Jaham al Kuwari, said that the preparations were in full swing for the event, which will be held from March 30 to April 6 in two venues – Aspire Zone and Doha Rugby Club.
Three titles apiece will be up for grabs for men and women teams in U-18, U-16 and U-14 age categories. The women’s team will be in action in Rugby 7s while men’s outfits will battle in Rugby 15s competitions.
Apart from Qatar, Jordan and Lebanon will field teams in men’s events while Jordan, Lebanon and Iran besides the hosts will clash for women’s titles.
“This is the first time that West Asia Rugby Championship is taking place on such a big scale,” QRHCF President Kuwari said.
“Our preparation to host the event is on track and we are looking forward to host a best edition of this tournament. It is an important event as the number of participating teams is big,” he added.
Kuwari hoped a good performance from Qatar outfits in front of home fans, saying the teams were preparing hard for the event.
“Last year, our women’s team won this event in Lebanon and they will be favourites to win again. Our men’s team came third in the event and we are hoping for title-winning performance from them this time,” said the QRHCF President.
Also present on the occasion, Qatar’s team captain Abdulaziz al Dosarri said his team’s preparations were on track for the championship.
“It is a big event and there will be tough matches so we are preparing accordingly,” said Dosarri.
“Our training for this event started many weeks ago. All the players are in good rhythm and we are looking to achieve good results,” said the captain.
“The Lebanese team will be favourite to win the title as they have very good players. We will give our best to challenge them. All our players are willing to win the title in front of home fans,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nasser Abdullah al Hajri, Marketing Director of Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) promised full support to QRHCF in making the event a big success.
“We have been supporting many rugby events since a long time and we will provide full assistance to QRHCF in this championships,” he said.
