World number one Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Indian Wells tournament on Tuesday after Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber claimed a 6-4, 6-4 triumph for a place in the last 16 round.  It is only the second time the 31-year-old Serb has lost this year since winning a third grand slam in a row at the Australian Open. His previous loss came in the semi-finals of the Qatar Open against Roberto Bautista Agut.
“I wasn’t playing well. One of those days,” said Djokovic.
“I congratulate him (Kohlschreiber) for playing tactically really well and getting me out of my comfort zone. He deserved to win.”
There was also a big shock in the women’s draw after the women’s world number one Naomi Osaka was beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic.
“I tried my best and I don’t really have any regrets,” said the Japanese 21-year-old.
“I tried to be positive throughout the entire match.I think there wasn’t anything that I could do in that situation, given how I was playing.”
Also in the women’s draw, number two Simona Halep lost serve eight times before falling to a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 defeat against Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the fourth round.  Vondrousova moves on to the quarter-finals to face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina after the sixth seed prevailed 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 6-4 against Australia’s Ashleigh Barty.
Earlier, Spain’s world number two Rafael Nadal powered past Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 victory in 75 minutes.  Nadal will play Filip Krajinovic in the last 16 after the Serbian surpassed Russian 14th seed Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-2.
Roger Federer is also through following a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow Swiss Stan Wawrinka and he will play Britain’s Kyle Edmund in the last 16 after he overcame Moldova’s Radu Albot 6-3, 6-3.
