With a view to helping Ugandan expatriates in Qatar follow the career path of their choice, the Ugandan Community in Qatar (UGACOQ) organised the first edition of UGACOQ Career Guidance Workshop last Friday.
Held under the theme “How to find and win scholarships and other funding opportunities,” the event attracted not only Ugandans but also other Africans such as Kenyans.
The workshop aimed to educate participants about how to get scholarships and access other forms of funding.
The guest speakers were Associate Professor Dr Eddy Tukamushaba and Assistant Professor Dr Dan Musinguzi, both from Stenden University of Applied Sciences-Qatar.
According to the organisers, these speakers were selected on the basis of their knowledge, experience and international exposure on winning scholarships and other funding opportunities.
The speakers emphasised that investing in personal development by acquiring essential skills is key to success.
Speaking during the event, Dr Musinguzi quoted Grendha Ramos that “no one will invest in you if you are not willing to invest in yourself.”
He encouraged the participants to be humble, open-minded and to look beyond self. He stressed the importance of having the right information and noted that technological advancements need to be integrated into the search for scholarships and related funding opportunities. He advised the participants that getting valuable information is not enough, and that one should use it to transform people’s lives.
In order to inspire the participants, Dr Tukamushaba took them through his career journey. He provided experiential accounts of his career and encouraged the participants to pick a leaf out of his life story and learn to believe in their own potential.
He said: “First, I learnt how to unlock my potential to win competitive scholarships; secondly, discovered the best scholarship databases and Apps to use; thirdly, discovered the simple proven framework for winning any scholarship, and, fourthly, learnt how to write winning curriculum vitae for scholarship and job applications.”
He added that he also explored the 40 most prestigious scholarships unknown to many people and gained new knowledge on how to use the ‘scholarship pyramids’ and ‘energy-time’ funnel. “I also learnt how to find funding opportunities by using targeted emails to universities and other organisations, acquired new knowledge on how to identify and avoid scholarship scams, among others,” said Dr Tukamushaba.
The participants were trained on how to survive the initial and most difficult stages of search for scholarships by joining a scholarship mastermind group, getting a good scholarship coach/mentor and accountability partner, starting a scholarship challenge, keeping a scholarship journal, among other strategies.
This was the first career guidance workshop organised by UGACOQ, the association which brings together all Ugandans and their friends living in the State of Qatar. This comes with the opening of the Ugandan Embassy in Qatar, the new development which will positively impact the lives of Ugandans living and working in Qatar through easy access to consular services like document attestation.
In his appreciation message, UGACOQ Chairperson Aliguma Saul Rayan thanked the guest speakers for their generosity in sharing such valuable information with the community and encouraged the attendees to put to use the knowledge they acquired and share it with their country folks and friends in Qatar and abroad.
