Medical supplies to treat tens of thousands of Palestinians have been sent to the Gaza Strip as Palestinians mark one year of protests at the Gaza-Israel border this week, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday.
“In addition to the massive existing trauma needs, the upcoming one-year anniversary of the Great March of Return may result in more casualties,” the Geneva-based UN health agency said in a statement.
More than 260 Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured by Israeli security forces since the “Great March of Return” protests began one year ago, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
The WHO shipment, which was funded by the European Union, is big enough to treat some 120,000 slightly injured or 20,000 seriously injured patients.
The UN agency also delivered four tents to expand the capacity of existing trauma centres in the Gaza Strip.
In the “Great March of Return” demonstrations, tens of thousands of Gazans have demanded that Palestinians be allowed to return to what is now Israel. Escalations are expected on Friday at the weekly protest.
The WHO and partner organizations last week appealed for 5.3 million dollars to treat people who have been wounded so far, and who could be wounded if the situation escalates again.
The UN Human Rights Council last week condemned Israel’s apparent excessive use of force at the protests, which are party organized by Hamas militants.
The Israeli government argues that it has the right to defend itself against Hamas and their terrorist activities.
