Tel Aviv/Gaza City
The Israeli army began striking Hamas targets throughout the Gaza Strip on Monday, in retaliation for a rocket that destroyed a home in central Israel outside Tel Aviv earlier in the day and wounded seven people.
Palestinians heard two loud explosions in northern Gaza and reported that two Israeli drones were hovering over Gaza City. Security officials in Gaza said that Israeli warplanes struck two Hamas military facilities and training compounds in north-west Gaza City. Ambulances rushed to the scene, but no injuries have been reported so far as the facilities had apparently been evacuated.
Multiple sources said Israeli warplanes struck a building in Gaza City centre that belongs to an insurance company run by Hamas. Israel said the building was a secret Hamas headquarters.
Three people were injured in the strike, medical sources said. A missile fired from a drone east of Khan Younis hit the southern Gaza Strip, eyewitnesses said.
More than 10 airstrikes were carried out all over the coastal enclave, security officials said. Hospitals in the territory declared a state of emergency. The strikes have been accompanied by a military build-up by the Israelis.
Two additional infantry and armoured brigades were being deployed to the area around Gaza, and a limited number of army reserves would be called up, an army spokeswoman said.
