The Greek coast guard said Saturday that one of its patrol boats intercepted a motorized rubber boat off the coast of Agathonisi island with 33 migrants on board.
The small island, south of Samos, is a favoured transit point for those setting out to illegally migrate from Turkey to Greece. The migrants were safely transferred to the harbour, the coast guard said. The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, said 668 migrants had arrived on the Aegean islands from Turkey last week.
The islands host some 15,000 refugees and migrants in state registration centres and accommodation provided by aid organizations, according to the UNHCR.
