The British Foreign Office (BFO) has hailed the Intra-Afghan Peace Conference, which concluded in Doha recently, describing it as “an important and positive step towards peace efforts”.
“The concluding resolution provides building blocks for future negotiations that we hope will form the basis of a peace process,” the BFO said in a statement.
The statement welcomed the broad and inclusive nature of the conference which included women, minorities and civil society groups.
“There is a long way to go, but the commitments to reduce violence and avoid civilian casualties can help pave the way towards future common ground,” the statement continued.
“After decades of conflict, it is clear that the people of Afghanistan need, and want, peace. The UK has been clear that only an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned political settlement will enable the country to thrive and prosper,” it concluded.
Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Counterterrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution Dr Mutlaq bin Majid al Qahtani has announced the success of the two-day Afghan Peace talks held in Doha under the auspices of the State of Qatar and Germany.
The conference brought together dozens of high-profile Afghan politicians and civil society activists representing many different parties in Afghanistan, in the context of the efforts exerted to support the peace process there.
