Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disorder that occurs if both parents are carriers of the gene, and, therefore, those intending to marry should follow the advice of the genetic counsellor, HMC senior consultant of Pulmonary and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar Assistant Professor Dr Mona Allangawihas has said.
“If the mother and father are carriers of the gene, there is a 25 percent chance that the child will have the disorder. Called autosomal recessive disorder, it’s a multi-system disease affecting many organs, especially lungs.”
She said the mother and father may not manifest any symptoms of the disease. Though they can do screening for those who have a family history of the disease, it is a mandatory pre-marital test in Qatar. “Some people do not follow the advice of the genetic counsellor and get married and have children. This exposes their families to the risk of having children with the deadly disease putting additional burden on their families requiring a lot of daily care and management,” she pointed out.
