The fourth local dates festival will kick off at Souq Waqif on July 23. The festival will run until August 3. More than 80 local farms are expected to take part in the festival.
Organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) in collaboration with Souq Waqif, the festival is part of efforts to support and encourage all national products, including dates, to achieve food security.
Organisation of the festival for the fourth year in a row is a testimony to the success it has achieved over the past years. The number of farms participating in the festival continues to go up year after year, which led the Organizing Committee of the Festival to increase the exhibition space this year.
The volume of sales is one of the most important indicators of the success of the festival. The total sales of dates in the 2018 season, for instance, amounted to 205,185 kgs worth about QR1.7 million, while the number of visitors reached 54,000.
Among the most important varieties of dates that will be on display for sale are Al Khalas, Al Shichi and Al Khunaizi.
The Organizing Committee has said the dates to be offered for sale must be free of insects.
The festival will open its doors to shoppers interested in buying dates over 12 days from 4 pm to 10 pm. The festival aims to promote local varieties of dates, to identify and supply different types, to attract visitors and tourists and to encourage the conservation and care of the palm tree.
