THE Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Qatar (NIDO-Qatar) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BIOSEC Solutions Limited to register Nigerians in Qatar for the National Identification Number (NIN) for national identity card exercise, said NIDO-Qatar President Ikoli Victor.
BIOSEC is one of the accredited companies by the Nigerian government to capture Nigerians’ data, home and abroad, to process national identity cards.
Addressing Nigerian expatriates at the NIDO-Qatar annual general meeting recently, Ikoli said the MoU will enable the company to commence enrollment of Nigerian adults and children in Qatar into the National Identity Database (NIDB) for the issuance of the National Identification Number.
He said the programme would make it easier for Nigerians in Diaspora to be registered as the federal government has made the NIN a mandatory requirement for Nigerians to avail some government services.
He added that the services include registration to cast votes during elections, opening bank account, land transactions, access to legal/health services, acquisition/renewal of the international passport, driver’s licence and the ECOWAS travel document.
Ikoli revealed that the exercise will likely start in August.
He urged Nigerians to take registration for the NIN seriously and view it the same way Social Security Number is regarded in the United States, the National Insurance Number in the United Kingdom or Aadhaar number in India.
The NIDO-Qatar president said the organisation is also working in collaboration with the Nigerian embassy in Doha to ensure that the Nigerian Immigration Service installs a permanent international passport processing machine at the embassy to save residents the stress of travelling home or waiting for Abu Dhabi office team to come to Doha to get their passports renewed.
He added that, with over 11,000 Nigerians working and living in Qatar, deployment of a passport processing machine in the country is long overdue.
“Working to ensure the Nigerian Immigration Service deploy the machine in Qatar was one of my campaign cardinal points during our election. I will continue to strive to make this a reality with the support of our embassy officials and the community in general,” he said.
Ikoli thanked the Nigerian government for establishing the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission to serve as a springboard to cater to the welfare of Nigerians abroad and harness their expertise for the development of the country.
He said the NIDO-Qatar will be represented in the forthcoming Diaspora Day, which will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2019.
He thanked the community members for their cooperation and support to the organisation.
