Islamabad: Pakistan’s election commission on Tuesday allowed the daughter and political successor of jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to hold a leading political role despite corruption allegations. “The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ruled that Maryam Sharif is eligible to hold the position of vice president in her party,” barrister Zafarullah Khan told reporters. Maryam was elected vice president of Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and has been at the forefront of opposition politics in recent months. Lawmakers from PM Imran Khan’s ruling party had approached the ECP over her appointment. (dpa)
