Qatar U-16 coach Abdulrazzaq Hedider says the recent success of the national team will motivate his boys to play at a high level as Qatar begin the qualifying campaign for the 2020 AFC U-16 Championships on Wedenesday.
The young Al Annabi are in Group E alongside Yemen, Bangladesh and Bhutan. The winners of the 11 groups will qualify automatically for finals while the best-placed runners-up will complete the final 16 team roster.
Hedider’s boys will kick-off against Bangladesh at the Aspire Dome – which will host all the group matches.
“The good results achieved by the national team, particularly in Asia will definitely put pressure on my players – I can’t deny that. But this is positive pressure and it will motivate the boys to emulate the older players,” Hedider told said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“It’s my belief that it is a process to grow with the team and grooming new generation of players who love football and enjoy the game. Results will come with good performance and the players will hopefully continue on to the national team. Even if we don’t get the best results, they will still be an important part of future national teams,” he added.
The Qatar players underwent a training camp in Italy in August. They also participated in a tournament from Aug 25 to 30, where they played against Jordan, Indonesia, Maldives and Lebanon. Qatar won the tournament in 1990 and have been runners-up on five different occasions.
“We had a good preparation for this challenge and I’ll like to thank the QFA (Qatar Football Association) for providing us with the best means to train. Our objective is to qualify for the championships but also we want to prepare these players for the future,” Hedider said.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh coach Robert Martin Ryles was full of praise for the facilities at Aspire while stating his team’s desire to be the best in the group.
“I am excited to be here and to test ourselves against the best teams. We are here to compete and get the best we can. We can also develop young players. We are respectful of our hosts and my boys will be able to enjoy these facilities. The reception so far has been excellent and thank you to Qatar for the hospitality,” Ryles said.
Delighted to being in Doha, Yemen will open the group proceedings early on Wednesday against Bhutan and the team’s head coach Mohammed Saleh Ali said, “Thanks to Qatar for the welcome. The players are happy to play in this venue and we consider Qatar our second home.
“In Yemen, obviously some issues have disrupted our plans. Our players are all over the country and we were only able to select them in July. All the other teams are probably more prepared than us but the plan is to develop these young men into players for the future.”
Bhutan are relatively unknown in the group and they have yet to qualify for AFC U16 championship, but coach Subramaniam Vaithilingam believes the opportunity to groom young minds for the small nation is more than victory.
“Aspire is a great venue for sports and my boys were excited yesterday when we trained. The weather is excellent inside and I’m sure the boys will enjoy playing here.
Obviously we hope to qualify from the group but at this tender age, we don’t want to put too much pressure on the boys – we want them to go out there and perform,” Subramaniam said.
“It’s a learning process for all of us and sure if we can qualify we will be happy but we will congratulate whoever goes through from the group,” he added.
