Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) has issued final and binding judgments in 18 arbitration cases out of 22 cases it received in 2018, Board Member for International Relations at the QICCA Sheikh Thani bin Ali al Thani has said.
Speaking at a legal seminar organised by the QICCA, an affiliate of Qatar Chamber, Sheikh Thani said that these indicators reflect the success of the QICCA in spreading the culture of arbitration within the business community in Qatar.
He said the centre last year decided in an arbitration case related to contracts concluded in accordance with the rules of Islamic finance worth QR2.5 billion, and challenged it before the Court of Cassation, which upheld the ruling issued by the QICCA.
“Since its establishment in 2006, the QICCA has worked to spread the culture of arbitration among the Qatari business community especially as it offers fast and complete resolution process to disputes between parties,” Sheikh Thani added.
For his part, QICCA counsellor Minas Khatchadourian presented the proposal on the new rules of the centre regarding the powers of the emergency arbitrator, noting that any party may submit a written request to the centre to appoint an emergency arbitrator to issue measures of an urgent or emergency nature, before the formation and appointment of the arbitral tribunal.
He noted that the emergency arbitration provision decides on an emergency request as soon as possible, and no later than 15 days after his appointment.
