THE Doha resident African Ambassadors Group on Wednesday gathered to celebrate Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed being declared the 100th winner of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.
Headed by the Eswatini Ambassador to Qatar HE Felizwe Percival Dlamini, heads of African missions lauded the Ethiopian prime minister’s efforts on democratic reforms, normalisation and regional stability that made him win the most prestigious prize recently.
The ambassadors praised the remarkable efforts Prime Minister Abiy made at home and in the region in only one-and-half years time in power. They also commended the prime minister for making the continent ‘proud’ and reiterated that “the prize is a pride for every African”.
While acknowledging the emergence of leaders bringing pride to the continent, the President of the Group Ambassador Felizwe said, “Many more other Africans are making us proud these days and showing us where to go and how to go,” alluding Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as “another African hero” after Nelson Mandela.
Speaking at the event hosted by the Ethiopian Embassy, Ethiopian Ambassador to Qatar HE Samia Zekaria elaborated the extensive domestic reforms and regional reconciliation efforts the Prime Minister has successfully pursued.
She congratulated the ambassadors for the pride prime minister has brought to the continent.
More than 20 heads of African missions in Doha attended the celebration.
