QATAR’S implementation of sweeping and impressive reforms in its labour market has made the country a role model for the whole region, German Ambassador to Qatar HE Hans-Udo Muzel said on Wednesday.
Delivering a speech during a function to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in Doha, Muzel said, “Qatar has taken a momentous step forward in improving the work and living conditions of migrant workers.”
“Germany highly welcomes these reforms and recognises the commitment of the government and business organisations in Qatar to becoming a role model for the whole region,” he said.
“We commend Qatar for its decisive support to the ambitious labour reform agenda, which is in the interest of migrant workers, government and businesses alike,” the German envoy said.
“Germany actively supports the ILO cooperation programme and has offered its expertise to the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, namely in the occupational health and safety sector,” he added.
Highlighting the growing trade ties between Qatar and Germany, the envoy said, “The future looks bright for the German-Qatar economic and commercial relationship, which continues to flourish, despite current regional and international challenges.”
“Germany is the largest economy in the European Union and the fourth largest in the world whereas Qatar is an important trade, logistics and investment hub for the Gulf region and beyond. The two countries have a strategic master plan to enhance bilateral economic, business, investment and energy cooperation,” he said.
Over 100 German companies operate in Qatar, he said, adding that some of them established their offices in Qatar much before its independence in 1971.
“German companies have become trusted partners and household names in Qatar, having contributed greatly to the impressive development of our host country. They have assisted Qatar in tackling food security challenges in view of the crisis of summer 2017, when the blockade was imposed on Qatar,” he said.
“German companies reaffirm their commitment to collaborating with Qatar in achieving the goals of 2030 Qatar National Vision. In this context, they are dedicated to contributing to the creation of a world-class infrastructure for hosting 2022 FIFA World Cup,” he said.
Looking beyond the current challenges, he said, “I should like to suggest joining forces to prepare Qatar’s public and private sector for the opportunities of the digital economy. This will contribute to attracting more foreign companies and investment to Qatar.”
Commitment to peace and security worldwide and multilateralism matters to Germans, he said, adding that today’s celebration of the ‘Fall of the Berlin Wall’ 30 years ago is a vivid testimony to this endeavor.
“We Germans know from first-hand experience that closed borders and erecting walls harm all parties. Most of all, it impacts the ordinary citizen, as this has certainly be the case in the Gulf. This is why Germany calls for a diplomatic solution to this conflict, which has lasted for far too long,” he said.
The people of this great and vibrant region have the power to overcome the current challenges and divisions, he said.
